Is passion the opposite of reasonable? –

This is what the final fantasy submitted as part of our campaign at the AIDS 2010 conference held in Vienna two weeks ago suggested. We were overwhelmed with the conference attendee’s huge range of creative responses. We have spent the last two weeks just reading and re-reading them. We had always suspected that people working in the sexual health field (researchers, activists, condom pushers) are a little sexy, a lot kinky and definitely get turned on at conferences.  Well now we have the evidence base to prove that.

We asked them if they would play with themselves on the first night of the conference

And we are guessing that they did do just that. Judging by the quality and variety of fantasies they were having. Some of them went straight (well queer) to the point with what they liked… huge gay sex, mtv and spanking

However we were most impressed with those fantasists who took our instructions to keep safe and play with themselves very seriously – we just love the way this minx was loving her sofa and the “sofa” sex that she was getting at the conference.

But we must finish on this wonderful fantasy where an anonymous participant asks if all this passion is the opposite of all this reason that is being displayed during the academic sessions in the daytime….

“We didn’t have to come all the way to the home of Sigmund Freud to know our desires will always be sublimated. But passion is the opposite of reasonable and in the spacey, jetlagged early mornings, I search the plenary for the set of your shoulders and the vulnerable naked place at the back of your neck that I have already stared at through so many meetings, imagining the taste of your skin. “

If you don’t know what “receptive cavity” and “insertive probe” are, you are not alone.

Anne Philpott, a public health specialist, found herself lost when she first heard those words at an AIDS Conference some years back.

“I had to think for a moment about what the speaker meant and then it hit me — she was talking about  the penis and the vagina!”

Having worked in the public health care sector for about 20 years, Anne says that was a eureka moment when she realized that,  “We [public health practitioners] have become so clinical about sex that we have completely forgotten about the reason why people have sex in the first place: for pleasure. “

This inspired Anne to put up The Pleasure Project, which is dedicated to promoting safe pleasurable sex as THE hot button to get people to practice safe sex. An ahem, hard job, but well, someone’s gotta do it.

“If you think about it, almost everything is sold or marketed, even subliminally. through sex. Coffee, your dream vacation, ice cream …why can’t be sex be marketed through sex?”, Anne asks.

One of the team’s projects is The Global Mapping of Pleasure, a directory of organizations, media, programmes and people  who eroticize safer sex. It is the first document of its kind and has been downloaded more than 20,000! The Pleasure Project also has also served as consultants on the set of porn movies to supervise condom use among the actors and putting in safer sex scenes.

It certainly isn’t my first time to work with the Pleasure Project. I was honored to be featured as their first guest blogger when they launched The Pleasure Project blog in 2009. Earlier this year, Anne graciously agreed to be featured in Playboy Philippines. : )  She boasts about this feat to all her readers with her post, “Check out my full page feature in Playboy”.

That’s what we are all about at The Pleasure Project. We think you can’t have safe sex unless you know how to have good sex.

But we are sad. . . . . . . .  that the world of sex education and HIV prevention does not seem that interested in pleasure or desire. And we are trying to change that.

This week at the world AIDS conference being held in Vienna we are spreading the word. And that’s why I am really excited to be a guest bloggers for Ana’s site – and tell you all about it.

I love SexAndSensibilities.com as it is an exact illustration of how more of the public health and sex education world should be highlighting safer sex. Between 5% and 13% of websites are pornographic – and at last count 27% of the world had access to the internet – and 20% in Asia. The old tired methods of school sex education and pamphlets is just not going to cut the mustard anymore – when people want to know about sex and how to make it safe.

So we are trying to spread the word this week in Vienna with the 25,000 participants at the AIDS conference – AIDS 2010. We are hoping to get them talking about what they get up to at conferences – rather than talking only about their research into what others get up to. And showing how sharing fantasies is good.safe.sex. And we know that those big international gatherings are a potential hot bed of fantasies, especially when you are talking about sex ALL day. . . .

We believe that you can have safer sex if you know how to have good sex. Globally, HIV is primarily a sexually transmitted epidemic. Yet, at international events like the AIDS conference, it is rare to hear sex being discussed. If we are going to really address the HIV epidemic, we will need to address sexuality directly, and promote realistic safer sex options.
