The Body Shop Celebrates 189,000 Signatures on Stop Sex Trafficking Petition

The Body Shop will hold a press conference announcing the recent achievement of 189,000 Filipino signatures on their Stop Sex Trafficking petition. This accomplishment surpasses their original goal of 170,000 signatures.

As stated on The Body Shop website, human trafficking is the modern-day equivalent to the slave trade and the third largest criminal industry in the world. Every year at least 1.2 million children and young people are trafficked into sexual exploitation and cheap labor. It was these “traffic stopping” statistics and the horrifying stories of those affected by trafficking—some of which you can read on the Body Shopwebsite—that inspired Body Shop founder Anita Roddick to partner with End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking Children for Sexual Purposes (ECPAT ) in the Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People campaign. The campaign, which aims to raise awareness of trafficking and funds for victims and people at risk of trafficking, has gathered support in more than 40 countries, sponsored numerous rallies against trafficking, and raised money via the Body Shop “Soft Hands Kind Heart Hand Cream”, the proceeds of which are donated entirely to ECPAT and other similar organizations.

The campaign’s current project, however, is the Stop Sex Trafficking petition, which calls upon governments to introduce strong anti-trafficking policies and devote more money to trafficking victims. Later this year, the campaign intends to bring the petitions of each country to the United Nations.

The Body Shop press conference will be on Wednesday, May 4th, 3PM at M Cafe in Greenbelt 3, Makati.
